As a cultural originators drawing from the time and place they live, artists are traversing the subconscious of a nation at war, whether they consciously intend to or not.

Americans today endure a state of war they by and large do not support. A palpable sense of loss of democratic control pervades and leaves many reacting differently. Some protest while others escape and many count on change in the upcoming election. A grey area emerges, ripe with subversion that synthesizes with the entertainment we seek out.

Enter art, culture, TV, fashion and filmmaking. What does the current cultural output say about our subconscious grievances, fears and desires percolating below the surface in a society where we perpetrate unfounded war abroad? What role is culture playing in galvanizing a collective understanding about the troubled times we’re living through?

War threatens our imagination as well as our humanity, which are qualities that every artist thrives on. This website seeks to provide a solid foothold of subversive artwork that can support a thread of defiance and demystification through the culture at large.

Featuring artists and their work regularly (roughly monthly), Artists At War provides shelter and exposure for work that defies a market that tends to be anesthetized and distracted. We encourage artists to share work here regardless of whether the thrust of the work is didactically "Anti-War." Artists At War aims to demonstrate and record what we as creative actors do and say during these tumultuous times.
